You've bought a new candle with a wooden wick and you want to enjoy it right away - but the flame keeps going out? First of all, don't worry, as mentioned, wooden wicks burn differently and less intensely than cotton wicks.
The following tips should help you ensure that lighting your scented candle with a wooden wick is and remains a pure pleasure.
1. The first lighting.
Hold the candle slightly tilted, and ideally use a lighter or a long match. Light the wooden wick by briefly passing the flame over the entire wooden wick until it ignites. If it doesn't work immediately, it will certainly after the second or third try :)
2. Give the candle time, especially at the beginning.
The way your candle burns on the first lighting is how it will burn on all subsequent lightings. This means that if you want it to burn down evenly without forming a tunnel, let the entire surface melt completely on the first lighting. Depending on the width of the candle, this can take three to four hours.
3. The length of the wick
When you receive your scented candle with a wooden wick from Just a decent day, the wick is already the correct length. In subsequent uses, the wooden wick should always be around 5mm long. If your wooden wick is too long or too short, it can affect the burning behavior.
Wick too short: the flame doesn't burn properly, but only glows slightly. The wick practically floats in the wax.
What you can do: Extinguish the candle, and use a paper towel or tissue to soak up excess wax from the glass. You can also carefully pour it out - but under no circumstances down the drain of your sink.
Wick too long: the candle keeps going out and won't burn.
What you can do: Shorten the wooden wick with your finger by carefully breaking it off.
And finally:
Before each subsequent lighting, remove any fallen soot or dust from the surface. This keeps your candle clean, and you'll have an optimal scented candle experience.
